Polygamy – Part 1

God never commanded polygamy in the Bible. God emphasized monogamy in marriage. God commanded men not to have multiple wives.

The Bible teaches that:

God never commanded polygamy – it was devised by man.

Genesis 4:19, 23-24;  Genesis 6:1-2, 5;  Genesis 16:1-6; Genesis 26:34-35;  Genesis 29:16-30;  Genesis 30:1-4, 9;  Ecclesiastes 2:7, 11, 17

God emphasized monogamy in marriage.

Genesis 2:18, 24;  Matthew 19:4-6;  1 Corinthians 7:1-2; Ephesians 5:22-33

God commanded men not to multiply wives.

Genesis 21:8-14;  Deuteronomy 17:17

Specific restrictions listed by God prohibiting certain sexual practices.

Leviticus 18:6-22;  Leviticus 20:10-23

Church leaders are to have only one wife.

1 Timothy 3:2, 12;  Titus 1:5-6

LDS Church Teaches:

Joseph Smith taught that polygamy was commanded by God in 1843 then after the US Government started laying down the law in 1890, they were commanded not to practice polygamy.

Prophet Brigham Young taught that when Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he brought Eve, one of his wives, with him.
